Health Importance and Definition

The most common and the layman term to define health is “The absence of disease”. However, it is not only related to the absence of disease. This blog determines the definition of Health and also the Importance of keeping good health.

Definition of Health

Health, in humans, the extent of an individual’s continuing physical, emotional, mental, and social ability to cope with his or her environment. In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Which later refined by WHO in 1986 as: “A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”

Types of Health:

Health is majorly divided into 2 categories:

  • Mental health
  • Physical health

As their name suggests the context from which the health is usually considered. Therefore, we can directly jump into the details of each one along with its importance.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is associated with the healthy functioning of our neural system and mental stability. Mental health comprises a state wherein a person is considered healthy when he/she bears no pressure on the mind. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, mental health refers to a person’s emotional, social, and psychological well-being. Mental health is as important as physical health as part of a full, active lifestyle. For a person to stay physically healthy must be mentally very fit and sound. Mental health disorders have adverse effects on our daily lives. Most of the time a mentally disturbed person heads for extreme actions to get rid of the stress they are bearing on their minds. Mental illness causes serious issues and may lead to suicide in some cases. Since we are living in a very fast-paced environment, therefore, those among us who are not pro-active usually become victims of obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). OCD is usually termed as Stress or Depression. OCD is currently the most widely spreading issue among teenagers and adults.  A number of psychological therapies have been invented that usually help a person to get rid of mental health disorders.

Importance of Mental Health

Mental health is really important to live a stress-free life. One must be mentally very sound in order to bear the hardships coming to their way. Perhaps, good mental health is not only determined by the absence of stress, anxiety, or other disorders. It is also determined by an individual’s capacity to:

  • Enjoy life
  • Bounce back after difficult experiences and adapt to adversity
  • Balance different elements of life, such as family and finances
  • Feel safe and secure
  • Achieve their full potential

Physical Health

The other main category of health is physical health. A person is considered physically healthy if he/she is not suffering from any physical disorder. A physical disorder may be referred to as the inability of an organ to work appropriately. Physical health is vital for a person to perform in full capacity. If a person is lacking physical health then it would not be possible for him/her to stay pro-active in any way. Thus, physical health is of great importance for humans.

A person with good Physical health is likely to have his/her body function working at their best.

Importance of Physical Health

If you are a working individual then you must give proper attention to your physical health. A person with good physical health has high bars of performance as compared to a person who is impaired. Therefore, it is very important to take care of physical health to perform optimally in our daily routines. Looking after physical health and well-being also involves reducing the risk of an injury or health issue, such as:

  • Minimizing hazards in the workplace
  • Using contraception when having sex
  • Practicing effective hygiene
  • Avoiding the use of tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs
  • Taking the recommended vaccines for a specific condition or country when traveling
